Cold weather fishing

12/28/19: Two days of fishing, zero fish. I checked out both Sportsman’s Lake in Frankfort and the Kentucky Horse Park’s Rolex Lake. A few strikes at Rolex, no fish. I tried various lures and red worms, still nothing. Oh well…

11/28/2019 Trout have been stocked in several FINS lakes over the last month. I tried to cash in at the Horse Park over the weekend, but no fish. There were probably 10 others fishing there, and I saw about half catch a fish or two. Corn was popular, and another angler told me chartreuse and orange spinners were working. I’ll try again soon…

  1. If you’re fishing Rolex lake for stockers, I’ve had the best luck there with a “Joe’s fly” spinner, with a small split shot attached for depth and casting. Fish at the end of the lake where the runoff pond flows into the main lake, the drain creates a small current and the trout tend to pool around the water flow. Casting in that area is tough but it always works for me.

    1. I’m just finding out about this Rolex Lake at the KY Horse Park, can’t wait to get out there and try it out. Also was wondering, I think I read where it said there are a few other lakes on the same property, are those publicly accessable? What is the cost to fish there(entry fee/parking)? Thanks.

      1. Hey,
I’m not sure about the other lakes/ponds, but I don’t think they are stocked. You might be able to call them to ask. In the winter months, there is no parking fee collected, so it is free. I believe when their season starts, it is like $5 for parking.
